Gluten Free & Dairy Free Living

note: this is not medical advice, these are just opinions of my own and recommendations we love as a GFDF household. Our son was diagnosed with Celiac at 15mo and diagnosed with EOE at 4 years old. We are so amazed at how his body has healed by changing two simple things in his diet (dairy and gluten) and we are so proud of him for being such a smart little guy who is strong enough to say “no” when offered foods that can hurt him. It’s been a long and stressful journey, but we are SO grateful that we know what works for him. And, after witnessing kids firsthand who were way sicker than G, we know this is NOT a burden, this is a blessing.

Knowledge is power!

There are SO many companies who work so hard to make delicious foods that not only protect people with life-threatening diseases, but also make little kids like ours feel like they’re not missing out!

Without further ado, here are our favorites (ongoing and changing). Please check the labels before you buy in case any of the manufacturers on the below list have changed their ingredients, as we don’t want anyone to get sick!

Hope this is helpful, xox Trish

GLUTEN AND DAIRY FREE LIST:

Here is my rapid fire list of Grocery Store Gluten Free AND Dairy Free Options that we consistently have in the house for our 6yr old:

Note that some of these are sweet treats (so use your own discretion on how much sugary stuff you feed your little one of course)

Grocery Store Household Staples:

Pasta:

  • Jovial Italian brown rice pasta - the best -sooooooo good and such a normal texture

  • TJ’s brown rice GFDF organic pasta

  • Jovial GFDF Mac n cheese - surprisingly so good

  • Daiya Mac n Cheese - also surprisingly so good

  • Bread:
Bread Srsly - truly the most delicious and authentic GFDF sourdough bread. It even has the classic tanginess you love from homemade sourdough. They bake it fresh weekly and ship to your door. Note that this is a denser type of bread so if you want something super fluffy, go with Canyon Bakehouse. But, as far as ingredients and nutrition go, Bread Srsly is the best.

  • When it arrives, store in fridge. Or, slice and freeze. Our favorites are Cinnamon Raisin, Plain Sourdough (XL size for sandwiches and French toast), Seeded Sourdough, and Sourdough Dinner Rolls.

  • Canyon Bakehouse - Bagels and Loaves of Bread - Honey White is a bigger slice bread, the others are delish too but smaller - we like this for peanut butter sandwiches and deli sandwiches since it’s more of a classic fluffy bread.

Other Staples:

  • Primal: Meat Sticks

  • Foragers: Cashew Milk Yogurt

  • Ripple: Pea Milk - unsweetened unflavored

  • Bosco’s chocolate syrup - to make chocolate milk

  • Daiya: Cheese Pizza (DFGF) made with oat cream so good!

  • Applegate Farms chicken nuggets and pepperoni

  • 365 brand Organic Oven Roasted Turkey

  • Quinn’s: Pretzel Sticks and Pretzel Rounds - SO incredibly delicious we were buying them before we even knew our son needed to be GF

  • Bear Snacks - dried fruit leather rolls, etc

  • Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers

  • MadeGood: Granola Bars and Granola Bites (blueberry, strawberry, chocolate chip) so good

  • Bob’s Red Mill pancake mix

  • Bob’s Red Mill homemade bread mix (use this for cinnamon rolls - SOOOO good)

  • Miyokos oat milk butter - the best for baking and they have a spreadable one for bagels

  • Siete: Almond Flour Tortillas - we use these for breakfast burritos, tacos, turkey roll ups etc

  • 365 Brand: Almond Flour Tortillas - usually get these when they’re available (Whole Foods) because they’re so much cheaper and still good ingredients

  • FitJoy: pretzels - not as hard as Quinn’s but not nearly as delicious - the mustard kind is disgusting don’t waste money on those lol. The Blue bag original is tolerable though!

  • Three Wishes: Unsweetened O’s Cereal - so good and so healthy - high protein no sugar, no gross aftertaste. Both boys love these (blue box) - can find at Whole Foods, etc

  • Feel Good Foods: potstickers

  • Hippeas DFGF Cheese puffs

  • LesserEvil DFGF Curls

  • Potato Chips (G’s favorite are Cape Cod brand, Boulder Brand Ripple, and Kettle Brand Sea Salt & Vinegar)

GFDF Sweet Treats:

  • Oatly Ice Cream

  • Cado Ice Cream - made from avocado oil so good and no weird taste - apparently Tom Brady is a fan too lol.

  • 365 Brand Almond Milk Peanut Butter Ice Cream (from Whole Foods)

  • Sweet Loren’s puff pastry, sweet loren’s take and bake cookies, etc

  • My GFDF cookies are the best of course - but I’ll post the recipe another time ;)

  • Yum Earth sour littles (alternative to sour patch kids - delicious!!) dye free too’

  • Yum Earth fruit snack gummies

  • Annies Bunny Gummies

  • Kinnickinnick Vanilla Wafers

  • Hu Dark Chocolate bars

  • Chocolove Dark Chocolate Peppermint bites - they also make really cute DFGF holiday options for kids

  • Goodie Girl Double Stuffed Chocolate Sandwich Cookes, Birthday Cake Cookies - we all try not to eat them before G does. They’re SOOOO good.

  • GoodPop: chocolate vanilla ice cream sandwiches, chocolate ice cream squares, popsicles, etc - these are such a game changer. They’re so delicious and so fun for kids!

  • Enjoy Life Chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips

  • BetterBites: Cupcakes - chocolate and vanilla frosting so great - we send these in for G for school birthdays

Naturally Gluten Free Snacks/ Minimally Processed:

Of course, the best snacks are naturally gluten free:

  • ALL Fruits (thank you Mother Nature!)

  • Vegetables (YAY!)

  • All Meat (unless it’s processed with gluten or dairy - check labels and buy organic/pasture raised for the best quality - but remember organic/pasture raised has nothing to do with whether or not it contains gluten or dairy… you want it to be GFDF AND organic).

  • Buckwheat

  • Certified GF Oatmeal (oats are naturally GF however many times they are processed in the same facility as wheat and cross contamination is common. SO if you’re going to eat oats, you need to make sure you’re eating certified GF oats).

  • Quinoa

  • Nut butters

  • Eggs

  • Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)

  • Rice - we love Lundberg Family Farms brand - short grain, arborio, long grain, wild rice, etc. So delicious

  • Cauliflower rice (pulverized cauliflower) makes a great base for a stirfry

  • Avocados

  • strawberries, raspberries

  • Bananas

  • Yukon gold potatoes or russet potatoes (for french fries!)

  • Red potatoes (for potato salad or mashed potatoes)

  • Baby spinach, cherries, blueberries

  • Chickpeas

  • Kidney beans, navy beans, pinto beans, black beans

Restaurants that do a great job with GFDF

(but even still, we usually avoid bread-like items because it’s too hard to know, so we stick with fruits, veggies, meat etc unless we know for sure we’re getting DFGF items).

  • FlowerChild - G loves their salmon and fruit etc

  • Sixty Vines - G usually gets a hamburger here with a DFGF bun (sometimes we bring our own bun to be sure), strawberries, and potatoes on the side

  • TrueFood Kitchen - hummus is really good here

  • The Goddess and the Baker - most delicious GF bread ever had - ask them if it’s DF I am not sure, just had it in Chicago on my own!

  • Etc etc. We don’t eat out a lot because it’s risky for our little guy - but if you do, and you happen to also tolerate dairy, the world is literally your oyster. So many options, almost every restaurant has a GF option. To check if the place has good safety measures, check out the FindMeGlutenFree app and read the reviews first!

  • Restaurants can put GF on their menus, but they are not regulated in terms of GF, they are only regulated for food safety, so shouldn't be trusted as certified GF

Vitamin Options:

  • Country Life vegan GF Vitamin D gummies

  • Carlson Kids chewable iron tablets, strawberry flavor

  • Country Life Organic Baby Care Liquid Multivitamin

  • Nordic Naturals: probiotic

  • Animal Parade kids vitamins (we like the kind that does not say “gold” because that kind has xylitol in it. Real sugar for us)

Other staple items he eats (not brand specific):

Medicine on hand:

  • GF liquid Benadryl - Kroger makes GF certified medicine

  • GF liquid Tylenol - Kroger brand GF- (Acetaminophin)

  • GF liquid Motrin - Kroger brand GF

Meals we like to cook as a family - GF:

  • Salad with chicken

  • Blackened Fish Tacos (Cod, Halibut)

  • GF Cauliflower Pizza

  • Spaghetti bolognese (with Jovial brown rice pasta and we use 365 brand organic unsweetened almond milk)

  • Chicken Fajitas or “burrito bowls”- onions, bell peppers, rice, etc

  • Pork tenderloin with chipotle rub and raspberry jam + soy sauce (GFDF) marinade

  • Shrimp bowls with quinoa and veggies

  • Crab cakes (jumbo lump crab)

  • Asian Chicken … fresh ginger, sugar, soy sauce, water, red pepper flakes, garlic)

  • Steak Frites ...aka steak w French fries

  • Steak au poivre (pepper steak)

  • Breakfast tacos (with Siete or 365 almond flour tortillas)

  • Beef Tacos (with Siete or 365 almond flour tortillas)

Cooking Materials:

  • If using the grill, he will need to cook burger/item on a separate sheet of aluminum foil

  • Can only use a cast iron if it is completely GF (aka gluten has never been in there)

  • Use ceramic or stainless steel pots for him

  • Replace your toaster - the crumbs are too risky, but you can use a toaster oven with aluminum foil

Cooking Notes:

  • Beware of using spices like garlic powder, onion powder, spice blends, etc because often times wheat flour is used as an anti-caking agent!

  • We stick to fresh garlic, onion, and fresh herbs to avoid gluten contamination unless we know the label says GF etc

  • Use stainless steel, plastic, and silicone utensils only for cooking because they can be washed in dishwasher (unless you have dedicated GF wooden utensils)

  • Buckwheat flour is acceptable and GF despite the word "wheat" in it

  • Anything processed that is naturally GF still needs to be labeled because of cross contamination - the FDA is more strict, it's easier for meat, which is labeled by the USDA, to go under radar

  • Cutting boards must be plastic washable or GF designated wood

  • If using cast iron, it must be dedicated GF cast iron (ie gluten has never been placed in it, because food/gluten gets stuck in there)
